<text>The historiography of school gardening in the United States has few contributions. The works that exist draw heavily from official documents and other primary sources which tell the story from an institutional point of view and are mainly outside the discipline. This paper is an exploratory study searching out the social institutions and cultural assumptions of women in Grand Rapids, Michigan who were instrumental in starting school gardening programs and maintaining them for about ten years. It focuses primarily on four women between 1900 and 1915 when the school gardens started along with home flower garden programs sponsored by various civic organizations and led by the Grand Rapids Ladies Literary Club. Close reading of mostly newspapers uncovers a complicated set of cultural and social characteristics and suggests that a corrective rural sensibility supporting white supremacy though eugenics motivated garden leaders. While more research is called for to strengthen this argument, it suggests a much-needed critical interpretation of the history of urban agriculture in the United States.

<text>This report presents an overview of the agricultural evolution of two adjacent counties, Benzie and Leelanau, located in the northwestern corner of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Encompassing a large portion of the Lake Michigan coastline of both counties, in addition to North and South Manitou Islands, is Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, created by Congress in 1970 and administered by the National Park Service. Although the National Lakeshore is best known for its unique natural features, many significant cultural resources also are located within the park, including a number associated with agriculture.

The primary purpose of this overview is to provide contextual information that can be used to interpret the region's agricultural history. Provided with this baseline information, subsequent researchers will be able to focus upon specific agricultural districts and /or issues within the Lakeshore's boundaries.</text>

<text>The South Retail Farmers Market was started in 1918 at the request of neighbors through petitions, letters by women's clubs, and other civic engagement. It was the second market started in Grand Rapids after the Leonard Street was opened as an experimental market in the northwestern part of the city. This market started near Campau Park. After eighbors complained it moved to the Truant School Grounds at the southwest corner of Ionia and Franklin. In 1924, after complaints by neighbors, it was moved further south on the east side of Division Avenue between Crofton and Cottage Grove. It lasted until the early 1970s when its existence faded out of the archives following the neighborhood uprisings of the late 1960s. This collection includes the original petition written to the City Commission to move the market in 1921. The petitions were transcribed and each person is included with available information and mapped in relation to the marketplace. This data will be added to a food environment map of the South Division section of Grand Rapids. </text>
